Urban Buddha
July 2002
48"h x 33.5"w

Inspiration:  The content of this piece to me is to be inspired to gain a sense of balance and tranquility in the midst of so much going on.  Just as the three serene Buddha images are depicted in front of chaotic Asian writing, and in an urban setting, so am I attempting to continue my meditation practice in the swirling vortex of family stuff, social obligations, and creative energy.  For me it is an act of will, an act of desperaion and an act of surrender to be able to survive balanced and serene in the face of constant change and challenge.
Construction:  Curved piecing, raw edge applique, piecing, "trapunto" stuffed arches above each Buddha.  Free motion machine quilted in rayon.  Commercial cotton fabrics.
Exhibits:  Urban Buddha was exhibited at the Pacific International Quilt Festival in October 2002, Santa Clara, California.
